Education
During its 2004 British GT Cup campaign, Team Jedi Racing was
supported by the students of Weavers School and the Lunar Racing
project. Being part of the project has really boosted the moral
of the school.
"The Weavers students are extatic
to be involved and their aspirations for their future careers
have sky rocketed. Its wonderfull to have students really
wanting to learn. It is a fantastic opportunity for Weavers
School and the school is very greatfull for the help recieved
from Team Jedi Racing and can't thank them enough." -
Jeff Pearce,
Head of Technology.
The students of Weavers School are using the Lotus as part
of their coursework for GCSE engineering, business studies,
english, ICT and Motor Sport.
GCSE Engineering:
The students look how the car is engineered and how components are manufactured.
They also manufacture some non essential components for the car in lessons. If
the components are up to the standard required, after vigourous testing, they
will be fitted on the car.
Motor Sport:
Although the students do get access to hands on work on other
race cars, for health and safety reasons (the students are only 16), they do
not work on the Team Jedi Racing Lotus. They do observe everything
from basic assembly of the car, race preparation and repair.
They also attend
selected race
weekends, but only as observers. Although there are certain menial tasks that
they could do, we feel that students should not be used as slave labour,
so if they are seen waxing the car it is only because they have begged and begged
to do so!
This is an excellent opportunity for the students. After
the course, when they are old enough, students who show
the correct aptitude would be given
the opportunity to work with Team Jedi Racing.
Business Studies:
The studenst are lookning at how the team works, how it poblicises itself,
how it raises sponsorship and how it spends sponsorship and how it balances
paying
for essencials with develpoment...
ICT:
Modern racing cars are full of electronics. The students are looking at the
engine management and race telemetry software. Seeing testbook examples in
the real
world is an excellent boost for the ICT lessons. The students can really
relate to the material.
English:
Although the media are doing a great job on the reporting of the races, Weavers
students are doing their own race reports in English lessons.
As the project grows, therre will be opportunities for
other subjects to join in. Next year geography is keen
to look at how Racing circuits both effect their
local environment both commercially and environmentally.
